ICASA 2025 Day 5: Africa Advances HIV Response with Innovation, Integration, and Youth Leadership

On Day 5 of ICASA 2025, Africa’s HIV response took center stage, highlighting innovative strategies, integrated care models, and youth-led solutions. The sessions underscored that ending AIDS requires holistic, community-driven, and evidence-based approaches.

Experts stressed the importance of integrating mental health services into HIV care, particularly for older adults and those with co-infections. Programs in Ghana and Zimbabwe demonstrated how combining HIV, malaria, and mental health interventions enhances adherence, retention, and quality of life.

Youth-led initiatives showcased the power of innovation. Presenters from Nigeria, Uganda, and Zimbabwe shared scalable community programs linking HIV, sexual and reproductive health (SRHR), and climate resilience. Projects such as agroecology-based HIV care, youth-focused laboratory education, and peer advocacy highlighted effective, locally driven solutions.

Empowering adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) was a key theme. Evidence shows keeping girls in school can reduce HIV risk by up to 87%. Panels emphasized investing in education, leadership development, and grassroots women-led organizations to deliver long-term social and health benefits.

Peer-led models demonstrated transformative impact. Zimbabwe’s Buddy System improved viral suppression among children and youth living with HIV from 89% to 98%, while Ghana’s MeSomBo initiative supported vulnerable adolescent girls through economic empowerment, trauma healing, and self-care strategies.

The conference also highlighted biomedical and digital innovations. Countries including Eswatini, Zambia, and Mozambique shared progress implementing Lenacapavir (LENA-CAB), a long-acting injectable PrEP. AI-powered chatbots like Aimee and VimbAI provided confidential guidance for adolescents, increasing confidence and uptake of HIV testing and prevention services.

Day 5 of ICASA 2025 reinforced that collaboration, integration, and youth leadership are key to Africa’s HIV response. Practical, scalable, and locally owned solutions are driving measurable progress toward ending AIDS across the continent.
