ICASA 2025 Official Opening | Accra, Ghana
At the 23rd International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa, continental leaders, community advocates, and global partners united to declare a bold vision for health sovereignty.

Ghana’s Vice President, H.E. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima, ICASA 2025 President Dr. David Parirenyatwa, and ministers from Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo outlined Africa’s three-pillar strategy to end AIDS by 2030:
• Sustainable Domestic Financing – reducing donor dependency and mobilizing homegrown resources
• Health Sovereignty – local production of medicines, vaccines, and diagnostics
• Human Rights Protection – ensuring equitable access without discrimination

Community voices, led by Ms. Priscilla Amarh Addo, emphasized the urgency of funding for grassroots responses, tackling advanced HIV disease, and accelerating access to innovations like long-acting PrEP.
Africa CDC, ministers, and experts highlighted practical strategies: expanding insurance coverage, leveraging diaspora remittances, integrating health systems, and fast-tracking local vaccine manufacturing.
ICASA 2025 is more than a conference; it’s a continental call to action: from Ghana’s rapid domestic funding response to Africa-wide plans for health sovereignty, the message is clear: Africa is leading its own health future.
