SAA @ 35: Launch of the African Journal for AIDS and Infectious Diseases (AJAID)

The Society for AIDS in Africa (SAA), custodian of the International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Africa (ICASA), is proud to celebrate 35 years of advancing African-led HIV and infectious disease research with the official launch of the African Journal for AIDS and Infectious Diseases (AJAID).

Under the leadership of Honorable Dr. David Parirenyatwa Pagwesese, 7th President of SAA, this new journal creates a dedicated platform for high-quality, African-focused scientific research on HIV, AIDS, and other infectious diseases affecting the continent.

AJAID addresses the longstanding underrepresentation of African research in global journals. While Africa continues to bear a disproportionate burden of HIV/AIDS, studies capturing the continent’s unique socio-cultural, economic, and structural realities often struggle for visibility.

Prof. Morenike Ukpong, AJAID Committee Chairperson, emphasizes, “AJAID is not just another journal; it is a declaration that African science deserves a dedicated, authoritative stage. We are here to ensure that local challenges are met with context-specific scientific rigor.”

Research with Impact
AJAID prioritizes studies that present context-specific interventions and practical solutions tailored to African health systems and communities. By translating research into actionable improvements, the journal aims to inform public health policymakers, clinicians, and community leaders directly.

Multidisciplinary Scope
The journal welcomes submissions across:

    • Biomedical Sciences: Virology, immunology, clinical trials
    • Social & Behavioral Sciences: Stigma, mental health, adherence
    • Health Policy & Rights: Health systems, legal frameworks

This approach ensures AJAID bridges the gap between academia and public health practice, providing a comprehensive resource for research and implementation.

Open access, call for Submissions
ICASA Director and SAA Coordinator, Mr. Luc Armand Hégésiste Bodea, encourages researchers, clinicians, and young scientists across Africa and globally to submit their work. For the first two years, all publications will be fully open access, maximizing visibility and impact.
