ICASA
The International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Africa
was established by a group of African scientists under the auspices of the Society for AIDS in Africa (SAA) in 1986, and is hosted by African countries biennially. It serves as a forum to discuss ways of managing and reversing the impact of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) on the African continent.
History
Originally, the ICASA was named the International Symposium on AIDS and Associated Cancers in Africa. The first of these conferences was held in Brussels, Belgium in 1986, the second in Naples, Italy in 1987. It was at the second meeting that the few African scientists and clinicians there present changed the name from AIDS and Associated Cancers in Africa to the International Conference on AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Infections in Africa (ICASA). Initially, ICASA was held annually, it was at the 8th meeting in Marrakech, Morocco that it was decided that ICASA meetings should be held biennially subsequently
